You’ve probably been taught to create a “results oriented” resume. They do not work anymore. The second minefield is the wording you use to describe your job responsibilities, especially if you are changing fields or job levels.

Far Reaching Potential

There is a tremendous amount of research being conducted on all frontiers of oncology, ranging from cancer cell biology to chemotherapy treatment regimens and optimal palliative care and pain relief. This makes oncology a continuously changing field.  A Duke oncologist is warning that the emphasis on comparative effectiveness studies may present obstacles for the field of cancer research, Scientific American’s Observations blog reports.  At the recent American Association for Cancer Research confab, Duke’s Amy Abernethy outlined several obstacles, starting with the obvious notion that while oncology is increasingly moving towards personalized treatment, comparative effectiveness research is based on large populations. Therefore, patients whose tumors’ molecular abnormalities are not as common might fall through the research cracks.

There is also a dearth of evidence to actually direct physicians to the most “medically effective and cost-effective treatment for individual patients.” In addition, drugs being used off-label present their own dilemma. Observations notes, quoting Abernethy as saying between 50% and 70% of cancer drug prescriptions fall into that category. There is very little quality research focusing on those uses.
Suggestions for tackling the problem, in addition to randomized clinical trials: better data gathering from physicians and patients on the ground, and an “e-ecosystem” to encourage the electronic flow of information between all the parties involved in cancer research and treatment. Surprisingly Diverse 


The range of opportunity in military research will come as a startling surprise to the uninitiated. While we usually think only of chemical engineering, weaponry and biochemical warfare in reference to military research the reality is that military research encompasses everything from history to DNA to stem cell research. Sometimes government funded or military research will begin with a particular goal in mind only to become research in other, sometimes completely unexpected areas.

An often cited example of scientific innovation developed unexpectedly and unintentionally was NASA's goal to put a man on the moon which inspired them to develop better sound recording and reading technologies. NASA's research was furthered by the music industry which used it to develop audio cassettes. Audio cassettes, being smaller and able to store more music, quickly dominated the music industry and increased the availability of music.

Consequently NASA’s space research surprisingly changed the music industry and there are many examples of this happening across a range of areas including microwave ovens, sonography and even some food additives and flavorings.

In light of threats to US security in recent years military research funding has enjoyed significant funding increases and the development of DARPA. DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) was established in 1958 to prevent strategic surprise from negatively impacting US national security and create strategic surprise for American adversaries by maintaining the technological superiority of the United States. military.

To fulfill its mission, DARPA relies on diverse research platforms to enhance multi-disciplinary approaches to advance knowledge through basic research and to create innovative technologies which address current practical problems through applied research.  DARPA’s scientific investigations span the gamut from laboratory efforts to the creation of full-scale technology demonstrations in the fields of biology, medicine, computer science, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, material sciences, social sciences, neurosciences and more.  As the Department of Defense primary innovation engine, DARPA undertakes projects that are finite in duration but that create lasting and often revolutionary change.
 Government & Military research

The holiday season is busy busy busy but that doesn’t mean the world of research stands still and so in many respects this time of the year is optimal for getting involved in serious job searching. Many businesses continue to recruit through the festive season and sending out applications during this time may lend you an air of seriousness appealing to employers.
Often when we think about research occupations marketing and medical sciences come to mind. It is interesting at this time of the year to contemplate theological research and archaeology. Those two staples of human growth and development which continue to fascinate and perplex.

Theological research

Theological research is all about looking at biblical writings or historic religious artifacts. Theological research by definition speaks of the divine and human encounter, and takes place in a community of people.  To speak of community and communication is to speak historically in terms of people, times and places.   Researchers cannot interpret religious resources apart from the shared meaning that develops in community around these resources.  Theological research calls the seminarian or the student of theology to reflect on his or her tradition, experience and faith journey, in other words, to examine his or her soul.  Theological research is in this way, often an extension of self-hood.

By definition, theological research is a critical juncture that places the researcher in relation to God and humanity, uniting the life of the mind with the life of the soul in the context of community. Research involves interaction with texts that provide new knowledge or understanding, and requires dialogical communication with people, directly and through texts.  A theological researcher will participate in a socialization process by which he or she will learn the language the theological research as well as the language of information organization.  In a seminary, this socialization process includes spiritual formation within a theological community.  

In terms of study as a spiritual work, nothing promises the researcher a higher concentration of this interrelatedness than a theological library formed by a theological community.  This community shapes the interpretive lens through which seminarians study and research theology—from the way faculty carry out instruction to the criteria librarians follow in collection development.  The community life of a seminary includes every social dimension of the institution. Theological Research rarely takes place in solitude, but builds on the efforts of community and previous discovery.  The theology library concentrates texts through its collections based on religious history and tenet and thus enhances these ideas. In the context of a library, the researcher interacts with multiple texts to discover unrealized connections in the interrelationships of these resources.  Of course, the researcher cannot simply bring together texts and expect related ideas to emerge from those resources.  The key task is the exploration of related texts and ideas through the library’s system of organization.  
Library research presumes a measure of focus, even though the researcher may only discern a visceral need for information.  No researcher could expect new knowledge to emerge from a random approach to resources.   To conduct research efficiently, the researcher must develop a clear focus on a research problem just as he or she would in any other research field.  Theological research according to the interpretive model requires the dialogical subjectivity that emerges from a hermeneutic of love. This is perhaps the primary distinction of theological research.

Archaeology & religious research

An extension of the philosophical research undertaken in theology archaeologists are often faced with the discovery of artifacts which carry implications for religion. It is their job to interpret the time and purpose of such artifacts and to work with theologists to understand meaning.

Religion can be defined as being concerned with the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe and from a research perspective, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, the investigation of devotional and ritual observances, religious artifacts and the moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.  Archaeologists may study the material traces of religious ritual, for example, the ritual destruction of ceramic vessels or the material religious sacrifice. Wikipedia points out that as in religious studies and the anthropology of religion, many archaeologists differentiate between “world religions,” and “traditional” or “indigenous religions.”

Here world religion is being defined as:

·         Based on written scriptures.
·         Has a notion of salvation, often from outside.
·         Universal, or potentially universal.
·         Can subsume or supplant primal religions.
·         Often forms a separate sphere of activity.

while indigenous religions are defined as:

  • Oral, or if literate, lacks written/formal scriptures and creeds.
  • ‘This worldly’.
  • Confined to a single language or ethnic group.
  • Form basis from which world religions have developed.
  • Religious and social life is inseparable.

The archaeology of religion often also incorporates related anthropological or religious concepts and terms such as magic, tradition, symbolism, and the sacred.

As market research becomes an imperative to successful company and organization building the field of market research is an increasingly interesting and lucrative career choice. Developing Marketing Strategies

A key component of the market research manager’s job is expertise in formulating questions for researchers to employ in their quest to understand market behavior or intent. The types of questions a market researcher might ask can be loosely framed under a few categories, each of which requires a different approach in terms of questioning. While this is par for the course for market research experts, for those new to the industry, and as a refresher, the three main categories of questions should include these considerations:

Asking non-threatening questions about behavior
·         Remember, the time period of the questions should be related to the saliency of the topic.
·         When asking closed ended questions about behavior make sure that all of the alternatives are included, otherwise stick to open ended ones. This point holds true for all marketing survey questions.
·         Use words that all respondents will understand, again this is a universal survey rule of thumb.

Asking threatening questions about behavior
·         Computer generated questionnaires can reduce the threat of socially questionable answers and increase perceived confidentiality.
·         Reduce the perceived importance of threatening topics by embedding them amid other more and less threatening topics.
·         Remember long questions are better than short questions when they are potentially threatening.
·         Don’t repeat questions even using different wording as this may place undesired importance on the topic or question.

Asking questions about attitude or intended behaviors
·         Make sure the attitudes being measured are clearly specified and articulated.
·         Remember to avoid double barrelled questions that don’t allow a single answer.
·         Ask the least popular question last when asking questions with underlying values and differing degrees of popularity.
·         Wherever possible separate the issues from the individuals.
·         Finally, decide which critical aspects of attitude/behavior you are measuring; cognitive, evaluative or behavioral. Don’t assume that each of these will be the same.

Good data is vital to forming market research strategies based upon real attitudes and behaviors. It is imperative that market researchers thus frame all of their questions to illicit, not the answers they want to hear but, the authentic intent and beliefs of the market.

Medical research is as much about discovering what the needs of humanity are as it is about finding cures for known illness. The challenge for the exemplary research professional is to find relevant research paths and to embark on a course that will have potential ramifications for change and further discovery. The depth and breadth of the field is vast but biomedical research is probably the most prevalent of these and the broadest in scope. Biomedical Research

Biomedical research facilities employ scientists in the fields of cellular immunology, infectious disease, immune models of human disease, the development of immune system-based therapies and vaccines, and medical research discoveries that provide tangible health benefits to individuals and the community. Included within the scope of biomedical research is an essential clinical component wherein a drug treatment or therapy developed in the laboratory is tested prior to being prescribed by doctors.

This is slightly different from a clinical research study and also from an observational study. Observational studies can be fascinating but they are also interesting in that a researcher may be part of a research trial which they will never see the final results of in their lifetime. One such trial was the Framingham Heart Study. From 1948 researchers followed four generations of family members in Framingham, Massachusetts, to see what had negative or positive impacts on the condition of their hearts. Some of the key findings of that study were that high blood pressure, high-fat diets, and smoking are not good for the heart. Researchers who began on the project did not necessarily get to see the final results of their research findings.  

Also in the field of medical research are areas of preventative medicine and community health which offer the medical researcher great skills crossover and diversity. These include disease prevention and control, nutrition, fitness and health and a gambit of other fields. Each of these is becoming increasingly important in medical research as obesity epidemics and vaccine resistant epidemics become prevalent.

Some of the discoveries in these fields are quite spectacular. An example are recent fat studies which actually show that one can fight fat with fat. Researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) discovered that orexin, a hormone produced in the brain, activates calorie-burning brown fat in mice. Incredibly researchers discovered that, "Without orexin, mice are permanently programmed to be obese. With it, brown fat is activated and they burn more calories." One of the researchers, Dr. Sikder went on to say, "We're now taking the next steps in determining how orexin -- or a chemical that has the same effect -- might be used in humans to therapeutically prevent or treat obesity."

Although these types of research don’t receive as much press as say, stem cell or cancer research studies, they also significantly impact the quality of life for many people. Medical research is full of such fascinating and life altering examples. As such the field of medical research is both lucrative and diverse.

Choosing a Research Topic

Choosing a research path is often the most challenging aspect of a research manager’s job. While addressing a practical problem in the field is often an obvious choice there are frequent occasions when the underlying problems are the less obvious but appropriate path for the researcher to embark upon. Requests for proposals (RFP) are one course a researcher can take to establish required research within their field. Typically RFPs describe some problem that an organisation would like researchers to address.  Typically a RFP describes a problem or need that requires research. Usually it will be quite specific and as such it takes significant guess work away from a research avenue and presents a clear opportunity.

Science has become the land of awe and opportunity for researchers, with the field expanding at an exponential rate to rival that of Moore’s law. Speaking of Moore’s law, that scientific research is becoming more connected with computer science all the time. Biology, geology and other sciences which in the past have been completely distinct and unrelated fields are merging with computer technology to create the wonders of the future. Today we feature amazing fields of scientific research.

Scientific research

There is no better way to understand what scientific research means in today’s world than to look at the people engaged in some of these contemporary and exciting areas, particularly the broadening field of artificial intelligence – the ultimate merger between man and computer.

Artificial Intelligence Research:

At the forefront of the challenging, futuristic (or is it?) field of artificial general intelligence is Daniel Dewey who is an independent scholar working on the theory of safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence. Dewey works alongside guys like Vladimir Nesov, a decision theory researcher, to establish the moral and interactive engagement artificial intelligence will have with humans in the near future. Nesov holds an M.S. in applied mathematics and physics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. His current project is Wei Dai's updateless decision theory, in pursuit of one of the Singularity Institute's core research goals: that of developing a 'reflective decision theory’. This is hugely interesting stuff and fabulous work if you can wrap your head around it.

Other research scientists involved in the future of artificial intelligence are Joshua Fox, Steve Rayhawk and Peter de Blanc. Fox studies the theory of superintelligence, developing models of agents with greater than human optimization power. He has served as a software architect at various start-ups and growth companies, and now works at IBM leading the development of a software product. Fantastic work if you can get it! Steve Rayhawk is a researcher interested in applying computational Bayesian decision theory to problems in technological forecasting, risk management policy, and social epistemology. Finally de Blanc is an AI researcher who holds an M.A. in mathematics from Temple University. He has written several papers on goal systems for decision-theoretic agents, including 'Convergence of Expected Utility for Universal AI' and 'Ontological Crises in Artificial Agents' Value Systems.' These jobs may seem extraordinarily scarce and too far out there for contemplation but they aren’t. Jobs in biotechnology, applied sciences, academic departments, nanotechnology, genomics and computer science all abound at ResearchNetwork.com.

For science researchers TED Talk innovators and thinkers can prove inspirational for taking a project down a new path. TED describes what TED is, and the TED mission, like this, “We're building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.” It really is a great site to visit!

Top tip for a career in future science
These scientific fields are not for anyone who is afraid to take a chance or dare to dream. That being the case applicants for jobs in these areas are advised to wear their heart on their sleeve. Share your crazy ideas with heartfelt enthusiasm. That coupled with the right credentials of course, will hold you in good standing. Research organizations generally want people who are passionate about what they do, individuals who will work on a team but who will retain a unique perspective and outlook for what is possible. Brilliant researchers in this type of science don’t all have PhD’s but they do all have passion.
